What each API error means
Full error referenceInvalid credentials
The API key and secret pair could not be authenticated.
Regenerate the pair and send both values from the same key.
Insufficient balance
Remaining credit does not cover the requested traffic.
Top up through M-Pesa Paybill 4073305, then retry the same request.
Invalid number
One or more recipients are not in a supported format.
Send country code plus number with no plus sign or spaces, like 254700000001.
Invalid sender ID
The sender ID is missing, inactive, or not assigned to your account.
Use an ID listed on your account. New registrations activate after operator approval.
Invalid message
The message body is blank or fails validation.
Check the body survived your own templating step before the request leaves.
Restricted send time
Safaricom accepts promotional traffic only between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM Africa/Nairobi.
Move the send, or the scheduled_at value, inside that window.
Still need help?
Unlimited support is listed on all three plans. Live chat is the quickest while you are mid-send; messages through the contact form get a reply from a team member in under four hours.
Anything you would rather keep on your phone, including last-minute sends.
Sender ID paperwork, invoices, and anything with attachments.
Contact form
Sales, volume pricing, and custom messaging infrastructure.
Include these in your first message
Everything here is already in your account or your request log. Sending it up front skips the round trip where we ask for it.
- The message ID or batch reference, if you already sent
- The Sender ID and the destination country codes you used
- The response body exactly as it came back, including the status field
- The time you attempted the send
- Whether it happens on every request or only sometimes
Not sent anything yet?
Create an account, top up through M-Pesa Paybill 4073305, and the first message can go out from the dashboard. Credits do not expire.
